In recovery, it’s been said, “my disease is talking to me.” It is a one sided conversation that will force the recovering alcoholic or addict in one of two directions. It has also been said that “we don’t have a drinking problem, we have a thinking problem.” These voices in our head will either be for us or against us, depending on which one we feed. Which one we decide to give credence to.

I can recall with perfect clarity those voices in my head prior to getting clean and sober. They were at constant odds with each other. One telling me to get my life together or it would end sooner rather than later. One telling me it would be too much work to begin a life in recovery.
