Rockport holds off Funkhouser late to win

ROCKPORT – Gavin Poole and Mitchel Becher had multi-hit games to help Rockport down Funkhouser 7-5 in American Legion baseball July 2.

Funkhouser took an early lead in the first inning when Logan Maynard’s single scored Caleb Tichenor.

In the second inning Becher hit a leadoff triple and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

Rockport took the lead for good an inning later when Trever Zink hit an RBI single to give Post 254 a 2-1 lead.

Becher followed with an RBI single and Manning Webb scored on a wild pitch.

Dalton Bartlett’s RBI single gave Post 254 a four-run lead at 5-1.

After Funkhouser got a run back in the fourth, Rockport answered in the bottom of the inning when Nathan Lamar singled and scored on Poole’s triple. Poole scored later in the inning on an error by the third baseman.

Down 7-2, Funkhouser scored three runs in the fifth off Preston Hendershot. But Lamar earned the save by pitching scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh.

Hendershot got the win, pitching five innings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

Jules Weinzapfel took the loss for Funkhouser, pitching four innings and giving up six earned runs on eight hits. He struck out four.

Maynard went 3 for 4 with a run scored and three RBIs for Funkhouser.
