LINCOLN CITY—Heritage Hills girls basketball Coach Mike Guth’s resignation was accepted by North Spencer’s School Board in Monday night’s meeting.

He said, “I’ve really missed out on seeing my son Nathan (age 14) and Caroline (11) play sports.

“Basketball anymore is a year-round sport—I’m just needing a little break.”

The 38-year old South Spencer graduate compiled a record of 72-105 for the Patriots. His team’s 2-19 record this season was his first with less than six wins. The previous three years he compiled a 40-26 record.

“I’m not done coaching— just done coaching varsity for now,” he said.

“I told Jay Burch (Heritage Hills’ athletics director), that I’m hoping to coach in the fall if he needs help.”

Guth was an assistant under former Patriot boys coach Steve Merkel before being hired as girls coach in 2003.

He said, “I want to wish the next girls coach, players and the program best of luck.

“I really enjoyed anytime I had former players come back to visit.

“I can’t thank Coach Burch enough for the opportunity to be a varsity coach.”
