GRANDVIEW – A shooting Wednesday, March 6 at 6280 N. Highland Road claimed the life of 64-year-old Grandview resident Linda F. Bowman. Alan L. Bennet, 52, of Grandview has been formally charged with her murder and is currently in police custody at an undisclosed hospital recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

He will be immediately transferred to the Spencer County Jail upon release from the hospital.

Spencer County 911 Dispatch Center received an emergency call just before 1 p.m. on the date of the incident, reporting shots fired during an ongoing domestic dispute. Indiana State Troopers, sheriff’s deputies and Rockport city police officers responded to the incident and discovered Bennet, who required immediate medical attention. Officers then discovered Bowman at the residence, already deceased. Bennet and Bowman were living together in the residence during the time of the incident, investigators reported.

Paramedics were able to stabilize Bennet and evacuate him by life flight for further treatment. Spencer County Coroner Rachel Gentry confirmed that Bowman’s death was the result of a single gunshot wound to the head.

On the night of the incident, ISP detectives and crime scene investigators remained on scene for more than nine hours processing evidence and piecing together the circumstances of the tragedy.

The investigation is still ongoing and further details will be released in due course.

Indiana State Police Troopers were assisted throughout the initial response and subsequent investigation by the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department, Spencer County Coroner Rachel Gentry, Spencer County Emergency Medical Services, Chrisney Volunteer Fire Department, Grandview Volunteer Fire Department, Rockport Police Department and the Spencer County Prosecutor’s Office.
