    AUBURN, N.Y.—Blake Monar, a 2008 South Spencer graduate, signed a contract to play in the Washington Nationals' organization Friday.
  • Nationals draft Rebel graduate
    ROCKPORT—Blake Monar, a 2008 South Spencer graduate, was drafted in the 12th round (367th overall) of Major League Baseball's amateur draft by the Washington Nationals June 7.
  • Martin honored by colleagues
    INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association honored Athletic Administrators at their annual banquet on March 20. The IIAAA has six districts in the state and athletic administrators in each district name a district Junior High School Athletic Administrator of the Year. District 6 selected Tim Martin from South Spencer Middle School. Tim has been in athletic administration for six years at South Spencer.
  • Alvey wins
    RICHMOND, KY.—Dakota Alvey of Rockport won three-round exhibition boxing match by unanimious decision match at Igo’s Boxing and Fitness Center March 26. Alvey, 15, beat 6-0 Michael Scearce from in the 178-pound bout. Alvey forced three standing eight-second counts. Alvey was scheduled to fight in the Indiana Golden Gloves Championship March 31, but his opponent pulled out of the bout, so Alvey claimed the title.

    KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Rockport's Sam Alvey was runner-up in the 10-11 year-old age division, 105-pound weight class of the National Silver Gloves Tourney March 12. He advanced to the finals via an opening-round bye and a 5-0 semifinal decision over Elias Lopez of Milwaukee, Wis., on March 11. A bloodied Shannon Ford of Syracuse, N.Y., won a split decision to edge Alvey in the finals. Alvey advanced to the national tourney by winning the Indiana and National Regional Silver Gloves titles.
  • Rebel trio, Patriot wins PAC middle school wrestling titles
    FORT BRANCH—R.J. Shaw, Brandon Hanloh, Jake Burden and Jason Davis pinned their opponents to win PAC middle school wrestling titles March 12. Heritage Hills placed third with 245 points and South Spencer was seventh with 147. Gibson Southern won with 310 points. Patriot Coach Mike Kemp said, “This is the first year that I can remember us filling every weight class and I’ve been here 13 years. That makes a big difference.” The Patriots placed sixth last year.
  • Bettag earns KIAC honors at IU Southeast for softball
    NEW ALBANY—Heritage Hills graduates Hanna Bettag and Jade Detzer have found success on and off the softball diamond for Indiana University Southeast this spring. Bettag, a sophomore, was named Player of the Week for the Kentucky Interscholastic Athletic Conference for March 7-13. The daughter of Darin and Lisa Bettag of Grandview, she batted .474 (9-for-19) with a pair of doubles and eight RBIs in six games that week. She has a .304 batting average for the season with 10 RBIs, which is second best for the 11-13 Grenadiers.
