Preparing Pets For Hurricane Irene

If you are in the line of the hurricane and have pets, now is the time to get prepared, not only for yourself but for your pets too. Leaving your pets behind to fend for themselves is not an option.

During Hurricane Katrina many people thought that just putting out some food and water for their pets during the hurricane would be ok, however, because of the huge amount of damage done, many people could not return to their homes. Animals were devastated and left to die. Humane Societies were able to rescue hundreds of them, but for many, the end was death.

Whether you have dogs, cats, horses, guinea pigs, it doesn’t matter. You should be making arrangements for a place to take them now or find a shelter that will let you take them with you. Many hotels will let you take your pets with you, all Motel 6 will. Seek out friends that may be able to help.

Be sure you take a care package for your pets with you too. Also, make sure they have identification on them in case they would get lost from you. Have their food, medications and medical records as well as some treats and even grooming equipment with you. For smaller animals take cages or carriers that they are comfortable with to further protect them.

Make sure you have at the minimum 5 days of supplies for both you and your pets.

If you are not evacuating, bring all your pets inside with you.

Make sure you cell phone is charged at all times and you have extra batteries for it.

Have pictures of your pets just in case they get lost so that you can show them around.

Even after the storm passes be sure to keep your pet safe. Keep them away from downed power lines, pools of water which may be contaminated or dangerous debris.
