Though the story was on the front page of last week’s issue, we think it’s important to use this space to publicly thank county commissioners for their vote outlawing the sale of herbal incense products abused as marijuana alternatives.
We suspect Indiana will soon follow other states in banning the products and a state legislator has already indicated his plan to introduce legislation. We also heard this week that an association of Hoosier physicians was issuing a similar call. But we credit county leaders for acting now instead of waiting and Spencer County Prosecutor Dan Wilkinson, who took the lead in publicizing the danger of the products, sold under the names of K2, Spice, Genie and Red X.
We hope Spencer County commissioners’ willingness to ban the sale of synthetic pot sets an example for other counties, such as Perry, where the products are still available. Unregulated products sprayed with chemicals to create effects similar to marijuana have no place on convenience-store shelves. We’re glad elected officials agreed and took action.
