ROCKPORT—Blake Monar, a 2008 South Spencer graduate, was drafted in the 12th round (367th overall) of Major League Baseball's amateur draft by the Washington Nationals June 7.

He was also drafted by the New York Yankees in the 26th round coming out of high school, but chose to play for Indiana University.

The draft experience was a little bit different this time for him.

“Coming out of high school, I was like, 'Do I want to go to college or sign?'” said Monar.

“Now after three years of college I'm just ready to get started (professionally). There's a good chance that I'll sign.”

The left-handed 21-year-old has an 88-90 mph fastball that peaks at 92. His second pitch is a curve ball. He throws a change-up, but scouts see that as the pitch he needs better command of.

Analysts commended Monar's commitment last off season after injuring his shoulder in his first appearance as a sophomore for the Hoosiers. He was relegated to designated hitter and outfielder duties.

Monar said the injury never required surgery and his time at IU was beneficial despite the injury.

“The biggest advantage going to IU was the difference between being 18 and 21 now,” he said. “Now I'm bigger, stronger and more mature.”

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Rockport native let his arm speak for itself this season for the 30-25 Hoosiers.  He led them with 79 1/3 innings pitched and 61 strikeouts. He had a 3.52 ERA with a 6-3 record in 14 appearances.

Monar said he'll likely play late-season minor-league ball for the Nationals this season after he signs a contract.

“I like that the Nationals are a young organization, so I should have plenty of opportunities,” added Monar. “I think I have until August to make a decision, but if I do decide to sign I think it will be earlier than that. I'm ready to get out there and play.”
