REO – South Spencer’s football sectional hopes took a big hit Tuesday, when it was revealed star running back Jake Burden would be sidelined for six weeks with a broken collarbone.

In a text to the Journal-Democrat, Rebel Coach Tom Packer said Burden suffered a break at the growth plate. The injury was sustained late Friday in a win against Heritage Hills.

Burden has been the linchpin for the South Spencer offense throughout the year, rushing for 1,160 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns. Just moments before sustaining the injury, he scored the game-winning touchdown to secure a 17-14 win over the Patriots.

The injury is a major blow for the Rebels, who enter sectional play 7-2 after closing the regular season with four consecutive wins.

South Spencer opens the tournament Friday with a home game against 6-3 Sullivan.
