ROCKPORT – Vietnam Veterans from across the area received a belated welcome home ceremony in the Spencer County Courthouse Thursday, March 30. The event served to honor local veterans and offer them a chance to reflect on their experiences in the war and their connection to comrades. Spencer County Veterans Service Officer Jason Heathman and Spencer County Commissioner Jim Seiler took the lead in welcoming those in attendance to demonstrate the county’s appreciation for its veterans’ service.
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a proclamation March 16 establishing March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in the State of Indiana. Citing the more than 300,000 soldiers wounded, 75,000 disabled, more than 58,000 killed and thousands more who endured prison camps and are still missing in action, the proclamation aims to ensure these sacrifices are not forgotten.
Spencer County Commissioner Jim Seiler read the proclamation before the gathering of veterans and family in the courthouse rotunda. Seiler also personally thanked the veterans for their service, as well as members of Rolling Thunder in attendance for their work to preserve the memories of those still missing in action.
“This is probably one of the greatest honors I’ve had in my life,” said Seiler.
