Alvey is national runner-up

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Rockport's Sam Alvey was runner-up in the 10-11 year-old age division, 105-pound weight class of the National Silver Gloves Tourney March 12.

He advanced to the finals via an opening-round bye and a 5-0 semifinal decision over Elias Lopez of Milwaukee, Wis., on March 11.

A bloodied Shannon Ford of Syracuse, N.Y., won a split decision to edge Alvey in the finals.

Alvey advanced to the national tourney by winning the Indiana and National Regional Silver Gloves titles.

Sam, 16-5, has trained for five years at Southpaw Boxing Club in Owensboro. He has won 10 state titles and an Ohio State National Title.

The son of Donald Alvey  and Laura Pounds is now ranked No. 2 nationally.
